Pathophysiology of Diabetes mellitus

The cause of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats may differ but the pathophysiology remains the same:

  • An absolute or relative insulin deficiency
  • Reduced tissue utilization of glucose
  • Extracellular hyperglycaemia and intracellular hypoglycaemia
