Stabilisation of the Diabetic Dog

As there is individual variation in the response to insulin, an initial trial or stabilisation period is required.

This period is generally 3-6 months but can be shorter.

Complicated canine diabetes

These are dogs with diabetes mellitus and one of the following complications:

• Diabetic ketoacidosis
• Hyperglycaemic, hyperosmolar syndrome
• Infections, e.g. urinary tract infections
• Concomitant illness, e.g. Cushing’s disease

Specific therapy to eliminate complications should be initiated along with insulin therapy. Once the animal is stable treatment can continue as for uncomplicated diabetes.

Uncomplicated canine diabetes

Two types of diabetic dogs can be categorized as uncomplicated:

1. Dogs presented to their veterinary surgeon after their owner has noted the appearance of clinical signs without general deterioration. These cases are not usually emergencies, however prompt, diligent treatment will prevent the development of complications.
2. Dogs which, after initial presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis or urinary tract infection and their successful treatment, are generally stable.
