U40 vs. U100
Caninsulin is presented in a glass vial at a concentration of
40 IU per ml of solution. Small dose volumes can be measured easily
and accurately.
To avoid dose error when administering Caninsulin to dogs and
cats, 40 IU syringes should be used.
Insulin products from pharmacies are formulated for humans. They have a concentration of 100 IU/ml. Insulin syringes stocked by pharmacies are 100 IU/ml 1 ml syringes and 50 IU/ml 0.5 ml syringes.
Warning
Using a 100 IU syringe
with Caninsulin is not appropriate, as this could result in
the animal receiving 2.5 times less insulin than required.
It is vital to educate your clients about the importance of accurate dosing and administration.
